When you teach in a school that is older than the republic it stands in, you learn to hold two times at once. The building remembers the Japanese era, the war, the long quiet decades of a farming town. And yet every September, a new class of six-year-olds walks through the gate who remember none of it — for whom this hundred-year-old school is simply new.
That is the quiet privilege of Taibao Elementary: we are old, and our children are always new. Our job is not to keep them in the past, but to hand the past forward — in a language the wider world can also understand.
Taibao is not a remote village. We sit at the seat of the Chiayi County government, beside the Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum and the high-speed rail that carries the whole island past our door. Our children grow up at a gateway. It would be a strange thing to raise them at a gateway and not teach them to greet the world that passes through it.
So we have chosen the slow, honest road into bilingual education: training our own teachers, opening an English classroom, joining the nation's 2030 Bilingual policy — not by importing a slogan, but by sending the people who already love these children to learn how to teach them in two languages. A hundred-year school does not change overnight. But it does change. We intend to.
當你任教的學校,比它所在的這個共和國還要老,你會學會同時握住兩段時間。校舍記得日本時代、記得戰爭、記得一個農業小鎮漫長安靜的數十年。然而每年九月,一班六歲的孩子走進校門,他們什麼都不記得——對他們來說,這所一百歲的學校,就只是「新的」。
這是太保國小安靜的特權:我們是老的,而我們的孩子永遠是新的。我們的工作不是把他們留在過去,而是把過去交給未來——用一種更大的世界也聽得懂的語言。
太保不是偏遠村庄。我們座落在嘉義縣政府所在地,緊鄰故宮南院,以及那條載著整座島嶼經過我們門口的高鐵。我們的孩子,在一道門口長大。在一道門口把孩子養大,卻不教他們向經過的世界打招呼,那會是一件奇怪的事。
所以我們選擇了走進雙語教育那條緩慢而誠實的路:培訓我們自己的老師、開設英語教室、加入國家的 2030 雙語政策——不是引進一句口號,而是把那些早已愛著這些孩子的人,送去學會用兩種語言教他們。一所百年學校不會在一夜之間改變。但它會改變。我們打算如此。

We promise every child a body kept moving and a mind kept well — through year-round fitness, our baseball team, and a campus where wellbeing is taught, not assumed.
我們承諾給每個孩子一個動起來的身體、一顆被照顧好的心——透過全年的體適能、棒球隊,以及一個把「身心健康」當成要去教、而非理所當然的校園。
We promise to meet each child where they are — pairing the Chinese-music ensemble, science exploration, and adaptive digital tools so that every kind of learner finds a door that opens.
我們承諾在每個孩子所在的地方與他相遇——把國樂團、科學探索與適性數位工具並列,讓每一種學習者都能找到一扇打開的門。
We promise a foundation of reading and a horizon of language — a strong reading culture at the centre, and a steady, teacher-led path into English through the 2030 Bilingual policy.
我們承諾一個以閱讀為底、以語言為遠景的校園——把扎實的閱讀文化放在中心,並透過 2030 雙語政策,走一條穩健的、由老師領路的英語之路。
Many schools treat “Healthy, Adaptive, Wise” as words for a banner. We treat them as a direction. A healthy child has the energy to try a second language; an adaptive school can teach that language without breaking what already works; a wise education knows that reading deeply in Mandarin and reaching outward in English are not rivals — they are the same habit, practised in two tongues.
This is the thread that runs from our hundred-year history to our bilingual future, and it is why the next two pages exist: one on how we are building our bilingual campus, and one on the remarkable town our children get to call home.
許多學校把「健康・適性・智慧」當成掛在布條上的字。我們把它當成一個方向。健康的孩子,才有力氣去試第二種語言;適性的學校,才能在不破壞既有運作的前提下教那種語言;而有智慧的教育知道:用中文深讀、用英文向外,從來不是對手——它們是同一個習慣,用兩種語言練習。
這就是那條從我們百年校史,一路通往雙語未來的線。也是接下來這兩頁存在的原因:一頁談我們如何打造雙語校園,一頁談這座了不起的、我們的孩子稱之為家的小鎮。
