The Shrine at the End of the Lane

A place-based bilingual course built around a 200-year-old shrine on the school's doorstep.

Every course needs a reason. Ours has an address.

On Guangde Road, a few hundred metres from this school, stands the Wang Family Shrine — the ancestral hall of the admiral whose title gave our town its name. It is close enough that, for generations, the children of Taibao have grown up playing in its courtyard, among the stone lions and flagpoles, without ever thinking of it as “history.” It was simply the shrine at the end of the lane.

One of those children grew up to spend his life in education, and came back with a question: what if the shrine we played beside became the place we learned English? Not a textbook chapter about a faraway castle — but the real swords, the real plaques, the real goddess next door who is said to guard children, all named for the first time in a second language. That question is this course.

The best place to learn a second language is the place you already love in the first one.

How the Course Runs

Six Sessions, One Shrine

A six-session course for senior-grade students — beginning in the classroom, walking to the shrine in the middle, and ending with the children themselves as guides. Draft arc; the school's teachers shape the final version.

1

The Admiral and Our Town's Name

Who was Wang De-lu, and why does our whole town carry his title? Students meet the man behind the name — in the classroom, with maps and a timeline.

English focus ·
  • This town is named after a famous admiral.
  • He was born here, long ago.
2

Naming the Treasures

Before the walk, the words. Students learn to name what they are about to see — the sword, the armour, the plaque, the stone lions, the flagpoles — in English and in Chinese.

English focus ·
  • This is made of stone / wood / bronze.
3

Walking to the Shrine

The heart of the course: the class walks to the Wang Family Shrine and looks — really looks — recording what they find on a bilingual observation sheet, matching the words from Session 2 to the real things.

English focus ·
  • I can see two stone lions at the gate.
  • How old is this? · When was it made?
4

The Goddess Who Guards Children

Next door at Fuji Temple lives the Seven Star Goddess, a protector of children. Students learn to introduce a belief that has watched over them since before they were born — gently, and in two languages.

English focus ·
  • People believe she protects children.
  • Families come here to pray for their kids.
5

Make a Guide Card

Each student turns their observation sheet into a real product: a bilingual guide card for one object or one stop, and a 30-second spoken English introduction they record themselves.

English focus ·
  • Welcome. Let me show you the Wang Family Shrine.
  • This is my favourite part, because…
6

Become a Guide

The course ends where it should: with the children speaking. They guide younger students, parents, or visitors through the shrine in two languages — turning a place they have always known into a place they can now share with the world.

English focus ·
  • Thank you for visiting. Any questions?
  • This is my hometown. I'm glad I could show you.

What the children make 孩子們做出來的東西

The point of this course is not a test score — it is a product the child can hold and a sentence the child can say. As classes complete the course, their bilingual guide cards and short videos will appear here, so that a course about our town becomes, in part, made by our town's children.
